Ninety-two Romeiros pray in front of Our Lady of Guadalupe church on County Street in New Bedford, MA during their 17-mile walk around New Bedford stopping at ten Catholic churches in an all day event. The Romeiros continue a centuries-old Azorean tradition popular in the island of San Michael where groups of men walk around the island visiting churches and praying for divine interventions particularly protection and forgiveness. The tradition was brought over to the U.S. by immigrants in the 1980's. PHOTO PETER PEREIRA
