Aiden Sousa guides fellow Romeiros as they leave St. Mary's Pastoral Center in New Bedford, where they had breakfast before proceeding to their next destination during a day-long pilgrimage to several churches throughout the city. The Romeiros uphold a centuries-old Azorean custom, common on the island of São Miguel, where groups of men walk around the island visiting churches and praying for divine help, especially for protection and forgiveness. This tradition was brought to the U.S. by immigrants in the 1980s. PHOTO PETER PEREIRA
